5 Quick Tips When Starting Out as an Artist
5 Quick Tips When Starting Out as an Artist
1. There are more art forms than fits in a classroom
Research, explore and don’t feel discouraged; you will find a style which speaks to you, and maybe you’ll even develop your own take on it. The world is full of many different art forms and styles from various histories and cultures, so keep browsing.
2. Learn from living artists
There is nothing like sitting before a teacher – not even the internet can replace that. A good teacher is a mentor, a guide and an encyclopedia rolled into one – and what might take you five years to realise, they can show you within five minutes of glancing at your work. Find a teacher; the oldest form of learning is undoubtedly the most effective.
3. Study, learn, repeat
It may sound cliche, but there’s no alternative to this. Keep studying your field, explore the works of other artists and ask questions. Be curious. There are artists who have been creating for decades, and still consider themselves students. Never stop learning!
4. Comparison is the thief of joy – sometimes
Ah, the artist’s inferiority complex; over time, you learn that comparing your work to others’ is fuelling your self-doubt, and thereby stunting your creativity. It doesn’t need to be like that. Comparing with a healthy mindset means you can objectively see where to improve your own work, whilst appreciating another’s.
5. All art is not for everyone
Create art for the love of creating art. It’s important to know and frequently remind yourself why you do it. Of course, it’s a thrill to receive great feedback from your audience but don’t make public approval your main purpose for creating. Accept feedback as well as criticism, and if your work is ill-received, know that not everyone understands your work – and that’s okay.
